   Being puzzled at why movie theaters tell patrons not to have operating cell phones is like being puzzled at why movie theaters have soundproof walls, comfortable seats, a large screen, and turn the lights off and close the doors during the film. Could it be: they want people to enjoy their service (the displaying of the film) so they come back?

   I have been to a movie theater perhaps two times in the past eight years, if that. It’s just not worth it to me to deal with all the rude noisy people. At home I can control how I watch a movie, pause and go to the bathroom – and there’s no stranger sitting behind me yakking on a cellphone.

   Maybe movie theaters are figuring out that they need to do something to increase the quality of the service they sell. Because people like me are no longer buying.

   P.S. The idea that this came “from on-high” specifically from Fox, specifically for the Wolverine movie, is hilarious. It’s creative, I’ll give you that. What other conspiracy theories have you thought up?

      i want to make what i feel is an important distinction. i have no idea who you are and i find your tone mildly offensive, but i want to be clear here about this one thing. This was more than just asking us to be courteous. That i understand and even condone. This was much more than that. This was two 18 year old kids telling an audience comprised mostly of adults that they would be ejected from the theater if they were so much as caught with a phone out. As i said in my post, if this was motivated by numerous complaints or even more serious issues, it’s more understandable.

      However, i am also not here to argue. have a nice day.

   At my screening there were no threats made, so I’d suggest that it happened as a result of local management at your theatre. Being in Eugene though, it’s entirely likely that the management here just decided to ignore any instructions from the studio / corporate to be thuggish. We tend to not respond well to such tactics here.

   Regardless, I find it hilarious, and the potential for conspiracy delightful. Treating your customers like criminals is no way to improve business, and yet that is exactly the tactic that big media likes to take. It seems to be the only one it can understand. With that history, I wouldn’t put it past them.

   I understood this from your original description, yes.

   Still have no problem with it. In fact, I probably would’ve been tempted to applaud. Also, I have no idea what the age of the theater employees vs that of the patrons has to do with anything. Bottom line – it is a private establishment, they have every right to set terms and conditions.

      As a regular movie-goer (go to a movie about once a week, sometimes more) I do have a problem with this practice. “If you’re caught with your cell phone out, you will be ejected” (emphasis added). Seems wrong to me, because there are some legitimate and honestly non-offensive reasons to have your phone out during a show (so long as it doesn’t take too much time or cause undue distraction to those around you):

      1. You check th time (because you can’t see your frakking watch in a dark theater) to make sure you can still make it to x,y or z on time or to figure out how much longer you’re going to have to sit there before the torture is over.

      2. You get a vibration from the phone, you take it out and you see it’s the babysitter texting you: Baby boy just ate canary. get to ER ASAP.

      3. You mistakenly thought you had put your phone on silent until it beeps. You take it out to fix the setting so it won’t happen again.

      I don’t consider these things rude. What I consider rude is talking on the phone (or to yourself or anyone else) during the middle of the movie. What I consider rude is someone clicking away on text messages during the middle of the movie. What I consider rude is a phone blaring out “Livin’ on a Prayer” in the middle of the show and then it happening again. What I consider rude is someone kicking my seat or getting up 3 times to refill their popcorn. What I consider rude is someone ruining the ending by talking about it before the movie starts. But what’s funny is I notice the rude behavior (whether it be from phones or otherwise) tends to happen during Oscar season the most, with the people who rarely go to the movie theater…who treat the place like it’s their own private home theater instead a more public venue.

      The point here is that the consequence was to be, lest I drive my point home, EJECTED for even having your phone out at all. It’s silly and disproportionate. To have a policy where said patron is asked to put the phone away entirely reasonable. To have a policy where said patron is asked to hand the phone over until the end of the movie, over-doing it a little, but still reasonable. But removed from the theater….give me a break.
